The idea of receiving dental implants may be exciting, especially if you have been living without a full set of teeth for some time. Being able to eat your favorite foods once again as well as smile without feeling self-conscious are just a few of the many things you look forward to, but have you considered what life will be like immediately following your dental implant surgery? If not, here are 4 post-op questions you might have as well as their respective answers.
#1 How Soon Can I Return to Work or Resume Regular Activity?
It’s not uncommon to see some individuals returning to work just a few days after surgery. This is largely dependent on the kind of work a person does as well as how they are feeling. Those who only need one or two dental implants may be ready to resume normal activity much sooner than those who need 4-6 implant posts for a full denture.
Ultimately, you must feel up to it and be mindful of avoiding strenuous activities, as this can prolong the recovery process.
#2 When Can I Brush My Teeth?
Even after dental implant surgery, you will be required to maintain good oral hygiene. This is essential if bacteria and harmful debris are to be avoided. The general rule is to resume your normal routine after a full 24 hours have passed. Then, you can return to brushing your teeth. But instead of using alcohol-based or peroxide mouthwash, rinse with warm salt water for two full weeks. This will help to deter bad bacteria while also encouraging healing.
#3 Is Swelling a Normal Side Effect?
You should not be alarmed if you notice that your face appears slightly swollen after your dental implant surgery. With any kind of oral procedure, this side effect is likely to stick around for several days (3-5).
The good news is that the swelling should go down after this short time. Applying a cold compress can minimize inflammation, creating a more comfortable recovery experience.
#4 When Can I Eat After My Surgery?
If you are hungry after your surgery, you’ll need to wait at least one hour before attempting to eat something. The bleeding will need to cease so that you can remove the gauze. But before reaching for a juicy hamburger or potato chips, you’ll need to stick with softer food items. Whether it is yogurt, oatmeal, or even warm mashed potatoes, this will allow you to get something into your stomach.
You should plan to avoid all hot foods during this initial time and stay away from using straws. Not only will you heal more effectively, but you’ll appreciate the faster recovery process as well.
Receiving dental implants can be one of the best decisions you make, so allow your dentist to answer your questions and better prepare you for life after dental implant surgery.
